What is Microneedling?

Microneedling (formally known as collagen induction therapy) is a minimally-invasive procedure for facial rejuvenation that involves the use of a special microneedling device to create hundreds of tiny, invisible, and controlled puncture wounds on the top layer of the skin.

As each tiny needle punctures the skin, it creates a channel or micro-wound. The controlled injury triggers the body to fill these micro-wounds by producing new collagen, elastin and… new capillaries! This leads to a reduction of scars and skin rejuvenation, with improved skin texture, firmness and hydration.

Typical Microneedling Treatment

Microneedling is easy! It takes a few minutes up to an hour to complete, depending on the area to be treated and the severity of the problem.

Your Skin Pharm NP will first cleanse your face, apply a topical numbing cream on the treatment area, remove the cream and prep the skin with alcohol. This ensures that you are comfortable and squeaky clean. Next, we apply our serum of choice and begin the treatment. The skin is punctured in a specific pattern using a skin needling device. As each fine needle punctures the skin, it creates a channel or micro-wound stimulating skin cell regeneration. Our serums are packed with effective ingredients and the depth of needling can be anywhere from 0.1 to 2.5 mm in depth. That’s deep!

Treatment for acne scarring and melasma is recommended every 2-4 weeks. Treatment for age management is recommended every 4-6 weeks. The number of needling procedures depends on the individual skin condition, but three to four treatments are typically needed for moderate acne scars.

Recovery and Results

Skin needling tends to be a comfortable procedure with low risk and short recovery. Most patients see results after their first treatment. Rejuvenation of skin may be seen as soon as 1-2 weeks after your first treatment. Depending on the depth of penetration of the needles, you may see dryness, scaling, redness and swelling after treatment. This is perfectly normal and usually only lasts for 24-48 hours.

To ensure proper recovery, make sure to clean your face with a gentle cleanser before bed. We love our Gentle Soothing Cleanser. At Skin Pharm we provide a post procedure kit for further care. Sun protection for several weeks is recommended.

Microneedling with PRP

Why add PRP? Studies show PRP further increases collagen production. We like to add PRP to microneedling when patients are seeking a quick recovery or have acne scarring.

MicroInfusion

Microinfusion is a treatment using a device with 24K gold microchannel tips measuring 0.13mm in width (that’s thinner than a human hair!). A proprietary blend containing antioxidants, botulinum toxin and hyaluronic acid is administered through the device allowing for precise targeting of scars, dark spots, pores, and fine lines.

Patients notice brighter, plumper skin within minutes of just one treatment. This buzzy treatment packs some serious skin perks!

Common Microneedling Questions

What does Microneedling do for your skin?

Microneedling is used to reduce scars caused by acne, surgery, or thermal burns. It is also used to treat and improve conditions like fine lines and wrinkles, loose skin, sun damage, brown spots, stretch marks, and pigment issues.

How long does it take to see results from microneedling?

Most patients see results after their first treatment. Rejuvenation of your skin may be seen as soon as 1-2 weeks after your first treatment.

How many times do you need to do microneedling?

Treatment for acne scarring and melasma is recommended every 2-4 weeks. Treatment for age management is recommended every 4-6 weeks. The number of needling procedures depends on the individual skin condition, but three to four treatments are typically needed for moderate acne scars. In the case of wrinkles associated with skin aging one or two refresher skin needling treatments are recommended every year.

Is microneedling for acne scarring permanent?

Yes! The new collagen produced from the microneedling treatments is there to stay. However, new breakouts can lead to new scarring. This is why it’s important to be under the care of a provider who can diagnose and treat acne. That’s us! If you’re still experiencing breakouts, we’ll tackle that first!
