Dull Skin? Hit refresh with a microneedling treatment. In addition to combating fine lines and wrinkles, hyperpigmentation, sun damage, sagging skin and scarring, microneedling is suitable for every skin type.

What is Microneedling?

Microneedling, formally known as collagen induction therapy, is a minimally-invasive procedure for facial rejuvenation that involves the use of a special skin needling device to create hundreds of tiny, invisible and controlled puncture wounds on the top layer of the skin.

As each tiny needle punctures the skin — don’t worry, we numb you first — it creates a channel or micro-wound. The controlled injury triggers the body to fill these micro-wounds by producing a rush of new collagen, elastin and new capillaries! This leads to a reduction of scars and fine lines, and skin rejuvenation with improved skin texture, firmness and hydration.

Typical Microneedling Treatment

Microneedling is easy to fit into your schedule. Depending on the area to be treated, it can take up to an hour to complete. Three days prior to your treatment, avoid topical creams that increase the sensitivity of your skin (retinoids and acids) and anti-inflammatory medications such as ibuprofen.

First, your Skin Pharm provider will cleanse your face, apply a topical numbing cream on the treatment area, remove the cream and prep the skin with alcohol. This ensures that you are comfortable and squeaky clean. Next, we apply a serum (packed with brightening antioxidants and hydrating ingredients including hyaluronic acid) and begin the treatment. The skin is punctured in a specific pattern using a skin needling device. As each fine needle punctures the skin, it creates a channel or micro-wound stimulating skin cell regeneration. The depth of needling can be anywhere from 0.1 to 2.5 mm — that’s deep! As advanced practice providers, we can go deeper than other professionals with limitations can, so you’ll see noticeable results.

Treatment for acne scarring and melasma is recommended every 2-4 weeks, and four to six treatments are typically needed to improve the appearance of moderate acne scars. Anti-aging treatment for reducing fine lines and wrinkles is recommended every 4-6 weeks, followed by 1-2 refresher skin needling treatments every year. The number of needling procedures depends on each individual’s skin condition, so consult with your Skin Pharm provider to find the best treatment plan for you.

Recovery and Results

Microneedling tends to be a comfortable procedure with low risk and short recovery. The numbing cream prevents pain, and most patients report minimal discomfort during the treatment. After the procedure, we’ll apply a light moisturizer and mask and provide you with post-procedure products to use at home while healing so you can enjoy glowing results!

Most patients see results after their first treatment. Rejuvenation of skin may be seen as soon as 1-2 weeks after your first treatment. Depending on the depth of penetration of the needles, you may see dryness, scaling, redness and swelling after treatment. This is perfectly normal and usually only lasts for 24-48 hours. Avoid exercising, hot tubs and saunas for 24 hours as your skin will be healing from the treatment.

To ensure proper recovery, make sure to clean your face with a gentle cleanser before bed. At Skin Pharm we provide a post procedure kit, including a gentle cleanser and healing lotion, for further care. Sun protection and avoidance is recommended for several weeks —  and really all the time!

Microneedling with PRP

Why add platelet-rich plasma, or PRP? We add PRP to microneedling for patients who want to be aggressive with anti-aging treatments, or for those who have acne scarring. Studies show PRP further increases collagen production; microneedling can produce a 200% increase in new collagen, while microneedling with PRP results in a 1,000% increase in collagen. Bonus? PRP speeds up your healing time. Learn more about microneedling with PRP here!

Common Microneedling Questions

What does Microneedling do for your skin?

Microneedling is used to reduce scars caused by acne, surgery, or thermal burns. It is also used to treat and improve conditions like fine lines and wrinkles, loose skin, sun damage, brown spots, stretch marks, and pigment issues.

How long does it take to see results from microneedling?

Most patients see results after their first treatment. Rejuvenation of your skin may be seen as soon as 1-2 weeks after your first treatment.

Is microneedling for acne scarring permanent?

Yes! The new collagen produced from the microneedling treatments is there to stay. However, new breakouts can lead to new scarring. This is why it’s important to be under the care of a provider who can diagnose and treat acne. That’s us! If you’re still experiencing breakouts, we’ll tackle that first!

I’m pregnant. Can I get microneedling?

Congrats! Unlike injectables like Botox and fillers, microneedling is safe for pregnant women. However, as we recommend with all procedures and products, please clear this with your OBGYN first.
