If you follow Skin Pharm on Instagram, you know that 2019 was a very busy year for founder Maegan Griffin and her team. In addition to expanding the popular Skin Pharm skin care line (we know you’re loving new formulas like Youth Eye Complex, Charcoal Mask and our most recent launch, Glow Factor), Maegan announced that we will open another practice in Atlanta in March. The flagship Nashville office continues to grow along with our Nashville family, including new patients, new employees and new Skin Pharm babies!
If you follow Maegan on Instagram, you know that she spends a lot of time developing effective formulas for the Skin Pharm line and answering questions from followers so they can find the right products and procedures to treat their skin care concerns. Driven by a mission to help patients look and feel good, Maegan leads her team of knowledgeable, approachable providers to advise patients on a personalized treatment regimen that yields noticeable yet natural results.
Also a wife and busy mom of two, Maegan recently shared more about how she finds balance in her life while running a business and finding time for wellness, travel, and friends. She also shared her own skin care routine built with the same products recommended to Skin Pharm patients. We asked Maegan to share more about the procedures she loves to keep her skin looking great. Here are five treatments Maegan can’t live without:
1. Gold Infusion
“It’s been a busy year, so I didn’t get much done in 2019,” Maegan says. “I’ve been taking good care of my skin at home, so I didn’t feel that I needed many treatments.”
That being said, Maegan felt the effects of the holidays on her skin in early 2020.
“My skin felt wrecked from traveling, holiday food, the stress of opening another location,” she admits. “My skin felt dull, so the first thing I did in 2020 is a Gold Infusion treatment.”
This cocktail of hydrating antioxidants and vitamins is a quick, refreshing pick-me-up that energizes your complexion. Since results are visible one to three days after treatment and last about three months, you’ll stay golden until springtime!
You may have heard that Botox is not only a solution to smooth fine lines and wrinkles, but a preventative treatment that keeps those lines and wrinkles from forming in the first place. Maegan is living proof of this.
“I started getting Botox at 24,” she says. “By starting Botox early, many patients find they eventually need Botox less frequently, and in smaller doses.”
Maegan avoided Botox during her two pregnancies (opting for microneedling instead — more on that below). Now, she says that she gets Botox quarterly, so she’ll plan her next treatment in March.
Maegan started microneedling in her late 20s and increased frequency during her two pregnancies when she avoided injectables and fillers. In addition to improving skin hydration, texture and firmness, Maegan’s early microneedling treatments helped build the strength of her dermis, the layer of skin below the epidermis, or the surface layer of the skin.
“I like to call the dermis the ‘business layer’ of the skin,” Maegan says. “The dermis is where you have collagen and elastin, and that’s what you want to plump up because that’s what makes you look younger. The dermis is what you want to be thicker; the epidermis is not. With our skin care, we’re trying to thin or shed the epidermis, or the rough scaly skin on the surface.”
Microneedling rejuvenates your skin by encouraging the production of new collagen, elastin and capillaries in the dermis. Since our skin thins with time, building up the “business layer” early on helps your skin hold its overall structure longer.
“Plumping up the dermis and shedding the epidermis is key to healthy, glowing and smooth skin,” Maegan explains.
Adding PRP to your microneedling further increases collagen production and speeds up the recovery process. Since Maegan feels that she needs microneedling with PRP twice a year, she’ll have her first session around May or June.
Another thing that happens when you age? Your fat pads move.
“Our fat pads move downwards and in, so our face loses structure” Maegan says. “Filler helps your skin regain structure.”
Dermal fillers are injected beneath the skin to plump lips, enhance cheekbones, chins, jawlines and temples. Fillers can also improve under eye hollowing or darkness, lift eyebrows, erase smile lines, and generally improve overall appearance.
Maegan started getting cheek filler once a year in her mid-20s, and says that this is one treatment she’ll never skip.
“I’ll always do cheek filler once a year,” she says.
Facial dermal fillers typically last between six to 18 months, depending on the product, the area of treatment, and the patient. Maegan has found that every 12 months works best for her, so she’s planning her next cheek filler treatment mid-summertime.
5. BBL Photofacial
Many of us made the mistake of getting too much sun exposure in our youth. Maegan, who is now vigilant about daily SPF use, admits that she did, too. But when she was in her early 20s, Maegan got serious about her skin care.
“I had to deal with the fact that I went to tanning beds in high school,” she says. “I started using SPF every day, and vitamin C and retinol to reverse the sun damage from high school and college.”
In addition to using the right products (today, she recommends Glow Factor for vitamin C and Retinol Drops for retinol) to combat signs of sun damage, Maegan started getting BBL Photofacials in her mid-20s. This non-invasive, customizable treatment uses high-intensity pulses of visible light to improve the appearance of red and brown pigment.
Since Maegan wears SPF every day and has avoided sun exposure as much as possible, she doesn’t need them as frequently anymore. She might add one to her regimen twice per year.
“If you adhere to a good skin care routine and start regular treatments at a younger age, you don’t have to be so procedure-heavy later on,” she says.
What about you? Well, you deserve good skin too!
