I recently shared my thoughts on balance and how I try to adhere to an “80/20” lifestyle. Today I’d like to share my daily routine, including the essential skin care, makeup and hair products I can’t live without. As a business owner and a mom of two young children, balance is something I’m always striving for, but I’ve got my daily routine down!

Morning Routine: Skin Care

On mornings that I exercise, I wash my face with water and apply Skin Pharm Youth Serum before my favorite Yoga Sculpt class at CorePower Yoga. After class, I start my usual morning skin care routine.

First, I cleanse with Skin Pharm Papaya Enzyme Cleanser or Gentle Soothing Cleanser. I switch between these because I have combination skin — the Papaya is great for all skin types and the Gentle is best for dry, sensitive to normal skin — so I alternate between both depending on my mood.

After patting my face dry, I swipe a Skin Pharm Clarifying Pad over my face, making sure to give an extra swipe in T-zone, where my skin tends to be more oily.

Once I’ve allowed the combination of salicylic acid, glycolic acid and botanical extracts from the Clarifying Pad to fully absorb into my skin, I dispense one dropper of Skin Pharm Youth Serum into hands and then massage onto my face, neck and décolletage with upward strokes to hydrate and plump skin. You’ll notice that I always use Youth Serum in the AM and PM immediately after cleansing and toning — this is why we call Youth Serum one of Skin Pharm’s hero products!

Skin Pharm Youth Serum

As soon as my Youth Serum has absorbed, I put one dropper of Skin Pharm Glow Factor into my hand and smooth onto my face with upward strokes to brighten skin tone and replenish skin (that gentle tingling feeling lets me know the vitamin C, vitamin E and ferulic acid are working to make my skin glow). On days when I feel like I need more hydration (especially during dry winter months when my skin feels parched from running the heat), I apply Skin Pharm Biotherapy Cream after serums. We get a lot of questions about what order to apply products, so remember that moisturizers like Biotherapy Cream always come after serums.

Next, I gently pat our Skin Pharm Youth Eye Complex around the eye area. Like our Youth Serum, the Youth Eye Complex absorbs quickly (which is ideal if you’re about to apply makeup).

If you know me, you know that the last — and, arguably, most important — step is SPF. In warmer, humid summer months I prefer Skin Pharm Sheer Defense SPF. In colder, drier winter months, I swap for Skin Pharm 100% Mineral Tinted SPF. Both offer a light tint that enhances my natural skin tone and protects from sun exposure.

Morning Routine: Makeup and Hair Products

When you’re happy with the way your skin looks, you don’t need to wear much makeup. With the tinted SPF serving as my “base,” I add a coat of Lancome Grandiose Extreme Mascara in Intense Black. I don’t wear lipstick every day, but when I do my go-to is Tom Ford Lip Color Matte Lipstick in Pussycat (04).

A few of my other staples include AmLactin Daily Moisturizing Body Lotion, which contains 12% lactic acid to gently exfoliate skin while providing hydration. I’m a big fan of Kevin Murphy Killer.Curls, especially when humidity is lower in the winter months, as this formula has fights frizz while defining curls with moisture. (Yes, it’s totally acceptable to have effortless beach waves any time of year!). Lastly, I love Aesop Deodorant, an aluminum-free spray that can handle a hot yoga class or anything else that life throws at you during the day.

Evening Routine: Skin Care

If I exercise in the evening, I gently cleanse before class with an Ursa Major Essential Face Wipe (these are great wipes to gently remove makeup before you do your evening skin care routine, or if you exercise midday or after work) and hydrate with Skin Pharm Youth Serum. When prepping for bed, I cleanse with the Skin Pharm Papaya Cleanser or Skin Pharm Gentle Soothing Cleanser to remove SPF and makeup before applying products.

On evenings when I exercise after work, I usually use a Skin Pharm Clarifying Pad after cleansing for a deeper treatment (oily skin types may already be using these twice a day). Next, I apply Youth Serum (the same way I did in the AM). Once that has absorbed, I apply Skin Pharm Retinol Drops or a prescription retinoid depending on how much I want to exfoliate. I focus application on areas of the face where I have melasma, or discolored patches, on my forehead and cheeks.

I then apply our Skin Pharm Youth Eye Complex, gently patting around the eye area just like in the AM, and Skin Pharm Biotherapy Cream to nourish and rehydrate skin overnight.

Two or three times a week, I use our Skin Pharm Clarifying Brightening Polish to exfoliate (be sure to be gentle when using this powerful exfoliator) and I also add the Epionce Enriched Firming Mask on evenings when I feel like I need more hydration. (Yes, this is the same mask that we love for long flights, road trips, Netflix marathons on the couch, etc.)

You’ll notice that the general rule is to let each product fully absorb into your skin before you apply the next one — it’s really that simple!

Skin Pharm Clear Defense SPF 45 is ideal for acne-prone, combination or oily skin and is a non-tinted, instantly absorbing formula. It’s hard to say goodbye to summertime, but it’s also easy to say hello to boots, scarves, plaid flannels, PSLs and everything else that’s great about fall. But before you run outside and jump in a pile of leaves, there’s something else you need to move to the top of your to-do list: updating your skin care routine.

But I have a skin care routine. Now I have to change it?

Even if you’ve consulted with a Skin Pharm provider and you’re using our recommended 6-step skin care routine, you may need to tweak your routine when the seasons change. Higher humidity helps skin retain moisture, and we find that many of our patients need extra hydration in the fall. In Nashville, the hot, humid days are gone and cool, dry air is affecting everything from our skin to our static-filled hair.

How do I get extra hydration?

If you’re not already using Skin Pharm Youth Serum as part of your AM routine, this is the perfect time of year to add it (and if you’re only using in the AM, you may want to double up and apply in the PM, too). The lightweight formula absorbs quickly but hydrates and soothes skin.

During your nighttime routine, consider adding Skin Pharm Biotherapy Cream, a lightweight moisturizing cream that combats fine lines and wrinkles, nourishing and repairing your skin while you sleep.

My skin is already really dry. Help!

We are huge fans of masking at Skin Pharm — we apply masks to our freshly washed faces on planes, road trips, or when we’re sitting on the couch at home. Our favorite hydrating mask is Epionce’s Enriched Firming Mask, which instantly (OK, it takes 5-10 minutes) calms red, irritated skin and improves the visible appearance of elasticity and firmness of the skin. Powered by hyaluronic acid, shea butter and willow bark extract, this mask is suitable for all skin types. If your skin is super stressed and needs some extra TLC, leave the mask on instead of rinsing it off (this is a great way to hydrate skin during long flights, too).

Is there anything else I should do?

If you’re regularly using exfoliants like our Skin Pharm Clarifying Brightening Polish or retinoids like our Skin Pharm Retinol Drops, you may need to reduce frequency in the fall and winter months. Be sure to discuss any irritation or redness you’re experiencing with your Skin Pharm provider so we can tweak your routine and figure out how to keep your skin clear and glowing year-round.

Speaking of clear and glowing …

If you really want to keep your skin looking its best year-round, don’t even think of going outside without your SPF. Whatever formula you’ve been using in the summer should work fine for fall or winter. If you haven’t tried our SPF products yet, you can read more about them here.

How did I even get into nursing?

Thankfully I was good at science. I didn’t love math or history, so I joke that science was the path of least resistance. After taking (and enjoying) a Human Anatomy and Physiology course, I received clarity, and continued on with my pre-nursing requirements to become a RN (registered nurse), and eventually a Family Nurse Practitioner.

So no, I did not dream of being a nurse when I was  6 years old (I was too busy singing Spice Girls), but I did find this path organically. And we’re all about things happening organically at Skin Pharm.

While in undergraduate school I discovered that I had a huge interest in the heart — literally, in the human heart. I took a job on congestive heart failure, and on that unit I was amazed at how an ill heart could present visible symptoms in the skin with weeping, oozing wounds. Perhaps this was where my interest in skin was piqued, but it still took several years for me to find my path to what would eventually become Skin Pharm.

Upon graduating, I knew the ICU would be great opportunity for me to exercise being a critical thinker, and to apply my knowledge of how to treat a sick patient when any or all of the body systems are failing. The experience I received was invaluable, but I knew it wasn’t my forever job.

I took a job with a plastic surgeon who focused on reconstructive surgery, which was partially a continuum of what I was previously doing, but more specialized. He didn’t have much of an interest in cosmetic plastic surgery, but he offered me the opportunity to learn injections and lasers. Once I realized how much I enjoyed medical aesthetics, I read every article, watched every video, went to every course, and asked for every trainer to visit the office.

I was also studying to earn my Masters Degree at this time and found a particular interest in a course called Clinical Decision Making for the Family Nurse Practitioner. This course emphasized the utilization of evidence-based practice and integration of technology into primary care — all coming together now, right?

I was 24 years old and just beginning to pay off student loans, so I found myself amazed by the money people would spend on their faces.

But I also realized that the people sitting in the chair — who were investing a great deal of money in themselves — took their consults very seriously. They took my advice about how to take better care of their skin, and their overall health.

So, when I said, “Buy SPF before you even start Botox,” they would. And they’d use it — I could see the difference in patients I’ve been seeing for several years now, and it’s still my number-one piece of advice for patients. When I said, “Get out of the tanning bed and then come back for lip filler,” they really did it!

I was doing cosmetic procedures, which some may view as superficial treatments, but I was also playing a part in helping people make positive changes that didn’t just impact their appearance, but their overall health. When you can help someone make a healthier choice, there’s nothing superficial about that.

Launching Skin Pharm — and then the Skin Pharm skincare line — was a big leap, but I knew it was the right one.

We quickly outgrew our first office, landing at our current spot on 21st in Nashville, where I work alongside my dream team each day.

But my job is never really finished. There’s always new medical research for me and my team to learn about, or innovative technologies and treatments to consider bringing to Skin Pharm. I do my best to balance my work with everything else in life — like spending time with my husband and two kids, hanging with friends, or traveling — but I wouldn’t change anything. Well, except maybe having more hours in the day!

I’ve been pregnant for most of the past two years. My daughter recently turned 1, and my son will be born in October. I can attest that the pregnancy glow is real —you can thank your increased hormones and blood flow for that!

Unfortunately, that glow is only temporary, so you still need to take good care of your skin. During my pregnancies, I’ve had to abstain from many of the anti-aging treatments we offer at Skin Pharm such as cosmetic lasers, Botox, fillers, and certain skin care ingredients, but I still adhere to a daily routine.

Here are some easy tips for taking care of your skin throughout your pregnancy:

  • Stay away from light and laser therapy (such as IPL), and from injectables (Botox and other fillers) for the entire duration of your pregnancy. Unfortunately, we don’t have any medical studies supporting the safety of these procedures during pregnancy. However, I do get microneedling done during pregnancy, as it’s the most natural way to boost collagen. Just get this cleared by your OB/GYN before scheduling your appointment.
  • Most topical masks are fine and can provide instant brightening and tightening effects. We like the Enriched Firming Mask by Epionce.

Those aforementioned hormones are your best friend when they lead to the fabled pregnancy glow, but they can also be your worst enemy. Changes in your hormones can cause acne, which is quite common during pregnancy.
Since you need to stay away from products made with retinoids (i.e. retinol, Retin-A, retinyl palmitate) and high concentrations of benzoyl peroxide and salicylic acid, turn to products and peels containing alpha hydroxy acids (AHAs) such as glycolic acid or lactic acid. Glycolic acid is safe because it is derived from sugar cane, and lactic acid is derived from dairy sources, fermented vegetables and fruit. We recommend Skin Pharm’s Pore Refining Drops, a 10% glycolic acid serum, or Epionce’s Lytic Tx, a retexturizing lotion for at-home treatment. For a mild micro peel, we recommend Skin Pharm’s Clarifying Pads containing 2% salicylic acid, 5% glycolic acid and 5% lactic acid. These pads help exfoliate skin, unclog pores, address breakouts, and prevent future breakouts.

Use these nine months to step up your SPF game. Most of us can do a better job of protecting ourselves from sun damage, and those increased hormones make you more susceptible to pigment changes and discoloration. Invest in a high-quality SPF product to keep pigment at bay. We’re big fans of 100% Mineral Tinted SPF (best for dry, sensitive skin due to its tinted moisturizing base) and Sheer Defense SPF (best for oily skin with its lightweight formula and acne-fighting ingredients).

  • As always, wash your face every morning and evening with a gentle, oil-free cleanser to remove all makeup and sunscreen. We like Skin Pharm’s Gentle Soothing Cleanser for all skin types, and gentle towelettes, which are great for those days you need to remove makeup prior to cleansing, or just to keep in your gym bag to remove dirt and toxins immediately after a workout.
  • Drink lots of water to stay hydrated and keep your skin (and your baby!) healthy.
