I’ve been pregnant for most of the past two years. My daughter recently turned 1, and my son will be born in October. I can attest that the pregnancy glow is real —you can thank your increased hormones and blood flow for that!
Unfortunately, that glow is only temporary, so you still need to take good care of your skin. During my pregnancies, I’ve had to abstain from many of the anti-aging treatments we offer at Skin Pharm such as cosmetic lasers, Botox, fillers, and certain skin care ingredients, but I still adhere to a daily routine.
Here are some easy tips for taking care of your skin throughout your pregnancy:
Stay away from light and laser therapy (such as IPL), and from injectables (Botox and other fillers) for the entire duration of your pregnancy. Unfortunately, we don’t have any medical studies supporting the safety of these procedures during pregnancy. However, I do get microneedling done during pregnancy, as it’s the most natural way to boost collagen. Just get this cleared by your OB/GYN before scheduling your appointment.
Those aforementioned hormones are your best friend when they lead to the fabled pregnancy glow, but they can also be your worst enemy. Changes in your hormones can cause acne, which is quite common during pregnancy.
Since you need to stay away from products made with retinoids (i.e. retinol, Retin-A, retinyl palmitate) and high concentrations of benzoyl peroxide and salicylic acid, turn to products and peels containing alpha hydroxy acids (AHAs) such as glycolic acid or lactic acid. Glycolic acid is safe because it is derived from sugar cane, and lactic acid is derived from dairy sources, fermented vegetables and fruit. We recommend Skin Pharm’s Pore Refining Drops, a 10% glycolic acid serum, or Epionce’s Lytic Tx, a retexturizing lotion for at-home treatment. For a mild micro peel, we recommend Skin Pharm’s Clarifying Pads containing 2% salicylic acid, 5% glycolic acid and 5% lactic acid. These pads help exfoliate skin, unclog pores, address breakouts, and prevent future breakouts.
Use these nine months to step up your SPF game. Most of us can do a better job of protecting ourselves from sun damage, and those increased hormones make you more susceptible to pigment changes and discoloration. Invest in a high-quality SPF product to keep pigment at bay. We’re big fans of 100% Mineral Tinted SPF (best for dry, sensitive skin due to its tinted moisturizing base) and Sheer Defense SPF (best for oily skin with its lightweight formula and acne-fighting ingredients).
As always, wash your face every morning and evening with a gentle, oil-free cleanser to remove all makeup and sunscreen.
