If you follow Skin Pharm on Instagram, you know that 2019 was a very busy year for founder Maegan Griffin and her team. In addition to expanding the popular Skin Pharm skin care line (we know you’re loving new formulas like Youth Eye Complex, Charcoal Mask and our most recent launch, Glow Factor), Maegan announced that we will open another practice in Atlanta in March. The flagship Nashville office continues to grow along with our Nashville family, including new patients, new employees and new Skin Pharm babies!

If you follow Maegan on Instagram, you know that she spends a lot of time developing effective formulas for the Skin Pharm line and answering questions from followers so they can find the right products and procedures to treat their skin care concerns. Driven by a mission to help patients look and feel good, Maegan leads her team of knowledgeable, approachable providers to advise patients on a personalized treatment regimen that yields noticeable yet natural results.

Also a wife and busy mom of two, Maegan recently shared more about how she finds balance in her life while running a business and finding time for wellness, travel, and friends. She also shared her own skin care routine built with the same products recommended to Skin Pharm patients. We asked Maegan to share more about the procedures she loves to keep her skin looking great. Here are five treatments Maegan can’t live without:

Gold Infusion: As fun as it looks!

1. Gold Infusion

“It’s been a busy year, so I didn’t get much done in 2019,” Maegan says. “I’ve been taking good care of my skin at home, so I didn’t feel that I needed many treatments.”

That being said, Maegan felt the effects of the holidays on her skin in early 2020.

“My skin felt wrecked from traveling, holiday food, the stress of opening another location,” she admits. “My skin felt dull, so the first thing I did in 2020 is a Gold Infusion treatment.”

This cocktail of hydrating antioxidants and vitamins is a quick, refreshing pick-me-up that energizes your complexion. Since results are visible one to three days after treatment and last about three months, you’ll stay golden until springtime!

That happy, relaxed feeling when your Botox fully kicks in

2. Botox

You may have heard that Botox is not only a solution to smooth fine lines and wrinkles, but a preventative treatment that keeps those lines and wrinkles from forming in the first place. Maegan is living proof of this.

“I started getting Botox at 24,” she says. “By starting Botox early, many patients find they eventually need Botox less frequently, and in smaller doses.”

Maegan avoided Botox during her two pregnancies (opting for microneedling instead — more on that below). Now, she says that she gets Botox quarterly, so she’ll plan her next treatment in March.

DIY Microneedling: For medical professionals only!

3. Microneedling

Maegan started microneedling in her late 20s and increased frequency during her two pregnancies when she avoided injectables and fillers. In addition to improving skin hydration, texture and firmness, Maegan’s early microneedling treatments helped build the strength of her dermis, the layer of skin below the epidermis, or the surface layer of the skin.

“I like to call the dermis the ‘business layer’ of the skin,” Maegan says. “The dermis is where you have collagen and elastin, and that’s what you want to plump up because that’s what makes you look younger. The dermis is what you want to be thicker; the epidermis is not. With our skin care, we’re trying to thin or shed the epidermis, or the rough scaly skin on the surface.”

Microneedling rejuvenates your skin by encouraging the production of new collagen, elastin and capillaries in the dermis. Since our skin thins with time, building up the “business layer” early on helps your skin hold its overall structure longer.

“Plumping up the dermis and shedding the epidermis is key to healthy, glowing and smooth skin,” Maegan explains.

Adding PRP to your microneedling further increases collagen production and speeds up the recovery process. Since Maegan feels that she needs microneedling with PRP twice a year, she’ll have her first session around May or June.

Cheek Filler: an annual pick-me-up

4. Filler

Another thing that happens when you age? Your fat pads move.

“Our fat pads move downwards and in, so our face loses structure” Maegan says. “Filler helps your skin regain structure.”

Dermal fillers are injected beneath the skin to plump lips, enhance cheekbones, chins, jawlines and temples. Fillers can also improve under eye hollowing or darkness, lift eyebrows, erase smile lines, and generally improve overall appearance.

Maegan started getting cheek filler once a year in her mid-20s, and says that this is one treatment she’ll never skip.

“I’ll always do cheek filler once a year,” she says.

Facial dermal fillers typically last between six to 18 months, depending on the product, the area of treatment, and the patient. Maegan has found that every 12 months works best for her, so she’s planning her next cheek filler treatment mid-summertime.

BBL: This machine kills sun damage (gently, of course).

5. BBL Photofacial

Many of us made the mistake of getting too much sun exposure in our youth. Maegan, who is now vigilant about daily SPF use, admits that she did, too. But when she was in her early 20s, Maegan got serious about her skin care.

“I had to deal with the fact that I went to tanning beds in high school,” she says. “I started using SPF every day, and vitamin C and retinol to reverse the sun damage from high school and college.”

In addition to using the right products (today, she recommends Glow Factor for vitamin C and Retinol Drops for retinol) to combat signs of sun damage, Maegan started getting BBL Photofacials in her mid-20s. This non-invasive, customizable treatment uses high-intensity pulses of visible light to improve the appearance of red and brown pigment.

Since Maegan wears SPF every day and has avoided sun exposure as much as possible, she doesn’t need them as frequently anymore. She might add one to her regimen twice per year.

“If you adhere to a good skin care routine and start regular treatments at a younger age, you don’t have to be so procedure-heavy later on,” she says.

What about you? Well, you deserve good skin too!

Remember, everyone’s skin care needs are different, and at Skin Pharm we want to find the personalized routine that works for you. Consult with your Skin Pharm provider by calling (615) 582-6726 (Nashville), (404) 314-4545 (Atlanta), or by emailing us. We can’t wait to see you in 2020!

Have you thought about your neck recently? If not, you’re not alone. People who diligently follow a skin care routine sometimes forget to adequately protect and treat their necks.

However, this neglected area of the body shows signs of aging just as much as (if not more than) your face. Neck creases worsen over time as the skin loses elasticity, and while you can partially blame your wrinkly neck on genetics, certain habits — suntanning, smoking, repeated motions like constantly looking down at your phone — can make everything worse. Obviously, for your overall health and wellness, we advise you ditch the suntanning and smoking, but unless you plan to stay immobile or wear a turtleneck for the rest of your life, it’s time to pay attention to your neck!

Prevention is key

The number one thing you can do to protect your neck from signs of aging is to stay out of the tanning bed and avoid prolonged sun exposure. Now, isn’t that easy? Even if you’re doing both of those things, be sure to put SPF on your neck (as well as your face, chest, shoulders, arms, hands and any body part that may be exposed to sun during the day) every day.

Each evening, apply an anti-aging moisturizer to your neck, applying the moisturizer in upward motions in the AM and the PM (in the AM, follow this step with SPF). We recommend Skin Pharm Biotherapy Cream, a lightweight moisturizer powered by ceramides, antioxidants and resveratrol that work together to nourish, soften and firm skin while fighting free radicals (free radicals damage healthy cells and cause aging — it’s OK to fight them). Also be sure to include moisturizer on your décolletage, as this is another often neglected area in need of TLC.

In addition to your SPF and moisturizer, your neck will likely benefit from a retinol treatment. You may already be using retinol on your face, so just be sure to include your neck. Our Skin Pharm Retinol Drops are easy to add to your skin care routine — simply apply them every other night before you put on your moisturizer. Overnight, the pure retinol, bisabolol and vitamin C will stimulate collagen production and refine the skin’s surface. Retinol can take some getting used to, so slowly introduce retinol by starting with once a week and working your way up to every other night.

Microneedling with PRP can reduce visible signs of aging on your face and your neck.

You can’t stop aging, but you can age gracefully

If you’ve learned anything about injectables, you probably know that it’s best to address wrinkles and creases before they progress. Studies show that Botox can be used to smooth fine lines on the neck just like it does on your face. Also known as The Nefertiti Lift (yes, that’s a nod to this babe), Botox is injected along your lower jaw and down your neck, targeting the platysma muscles to smooth and tighten skin.

Another option to minimize the signs of aging on your neck and prevent creases from worsening is microneedling with PRP on your face and neck. Take it one step further with PRP injections, which can smooth neck creases and wrinkles. If you incorporate treatments like Botox and microneedling before deep lines form, your neck will thank you later.

How did I get into nursing?

From the time I was probably 4 or 5 years old, I knew I wanted to be a nurse (well, in addition to owning a Taco Bell because I thought, how cool would that be, mom?!).

I have always loved the feeling of taking care of someone and luckily for me, science and anatomy classes were my jam. After graduating with my Bachelor of Science in Nursing from Belmont University, I began working in the hospital setting, thriving in an Intensive Care Unit setting in both the Surgical ICU and Pediatric ICU. My love for nursing and my desire to further my education led me back to Belmont to earn my Master of Science as a Family Nurse Practitioner. I graduated from Belmont in December 2017, passed my board examination, and have been at Skin Pharm ever since.

How did I end up at Skin Pharm?

Maegan had just opened Skin Pharm in January 2017, and while I was in graduate school, I reached out to see if I could do some of my clinical hours at Skin Pharm. THANK GOODNESS she said “yes!” My grandfather owned his own practice in medical dermatology until he retired, and I knew going into a field specializing in aesthetic dermatology was an absolute dream. It’s the perfect career with a combination of nerdy research paired with a beautiful aesthetic. After completing my clinical hours — and with the birth of Maegan’s precious son Eli coming soon — I was asked to stay on as a nurse practitioner for the Skin Pharm team. Talk about dreams coming true! I am so blessed to be a part of the Skin Pharm family.

What do I like to do when I’m not at Skin Pharm?

When I’m not at work you can find me with my husband Cody and our amazing dog Weller (he’s part Australian Shepherd/part poodle …  seriously, this brand is awesome), and our soon to be SON who is due June 1st, although I guess we’ll see when he is actually going to make his arrival! We love to travel everywhere. Cody is a bit of a national parks junkie, so our trips are normally spent somewhere between snowshoeing 10 miles one day and me hitting the spa the next.

What do I wish I’d done when I was younger to take better care of my skin?

I wish I wouldn’t have believed people when they said Cetaphil and Retin-A were going to cure my acne, because there are seriously so many other products that are amazing at creating a clear complexion that won’t make your face feel like it’s falling off (if you know, you know). Also, the tanning bed. What was I thinking?! My prom dress would have looked just fine if I was three shades lighter.

What would I like to continue to learn?

Cosmetic dermatology is an ever-evolving career path. I love the research involved in my job. Ever notice how the aesthetic scene seems to take social media by storm? There are updated research articles, new injecting methods, and unlimited amount of data that we study daily to provide you the best services possible. At Skin Pharm, our continuing education is limitless so we can provide you with the safest and most up to date practices.

What do I hope for my patients?

I hope that when you come to see me, you feel heard and understood. Whether your concerns are skin care, procedures, and/or naturally focused injectables, I’m your girl. I’ll listen to your needs, tailor treatments specifically to you, and watch your self-confidence rise. I hope you leave me feeling that all of your questions were answered, needs were met, and that you’re just as excited as I am for your next visit.

We love Botox, and we’re not ashamed to admit it! And you shouldn’t be, either.

We love that Botox erases dynamic wrinkles, or fine lines caused by repeated facial movements. These movements range from smiling and laughing (which we certainly don’t recommend cutting back on for the sake of your face) to glaring and frowning (we’re not here to mess with ability to look angry, or even your RBF). But did you know that Botox injections can be used for far more than targeting wrinkles?

Lip Flip

The lip flip is one of our most requested procedures, as it creates a more pronounced, defined lip without adding volume. We inject a small amount of Botox into the orbicularis oris, the muscles around the mouth, to relax these muscles, slightly rolling the lip outward. The results are subtle but noticeable, relaxing the upper lip and enhancing the Cupid’s bow. If you’re looking for more definition in your lips but not necessarily more volume, this treatment is for you! If you want volume, we can do a lip flip in combination with other lip fillers — just ask your nurse practitioner about what options are the best fit for you.

Gummy Smile

Since we’re talking about the mouth, Botox can also help the appearance of a “gummy” smile, or an excessive amount of gum visible under the upper lip. In the past, this was often treated by excessive orthodontic treatment or surgical procedures, but now we can simply inject Botox to relax the lip, giving you a more balanced, confident smile. Studies show that this treatment is a non-invasive option that provides visible results, especially for patients looking for a minimally-invasive solution. Again, talk with your Skin Pharm nurse practitioner about the best treatment option for you, as additional lip fillers like Juvederm or Restylane could also help balance by adding fullness.

Jaw Botox

Masseter Botox — injecting Botox along the jawline — can slim and define your jawline, further defining your face shape. We can also do this in combination with fillers like Juvederm or Restylane for added balance and definition. This procedure has an added benefit for individuals who are prone to clenching or grinding their teeth, as it relaxes the masseter muscle where tension is held. Our patients tell us that in addition to the defined jawline (which they love), they’re experiencing fewer headaches and jaw pain. Talk to your Skin Pharm nurse practitioner if you’re experiencing headaches or jaw pain, as Botox may help alleviate these symptoms.

Remember, Botox takes up to two weeks to fully take effect, so plan accordingly if you’re getting injections before an event.

How did I get into nursing?

I wish I had a cool story to tell about how I got into nursing. But the truth is, I was 18 years old and had just graduated from high school. My mom told me she did not want me to go into college “undecided” on a degree. So I asked her, “Well, what should I do?” She told me that I was always better at science and math courses, so I should try nursing. And if it didn’t work out, I could use the prerequisite courses to do something else in healthcare.

Fortunately, I loved nursing once I got into the program and now, here we are!

How did I end up at Skin Pharm?

I first came to Skin Pharm as a patient. I had seen Skin Pharm founder and owner Maegan Griffin for treatment of acne and rosacea (and, of course, Botox injections!). During my nurse practitioner program, I did a specialty rotation in dermatology. I fell in love with all things skin and found that I was extremely drawn to cosmetic dermatology. As I began to think of pursuing a career in cosmetic dermatology, I knew Skin Pharm was the place I wanted to be. I started keeping in touch with Maegan about potential opportunities at Skin Pharm. As Skin Pharm quickly expanded, Maegan told me she was looking to hire another provider. I don’t know how I got so lucky, but she chose ME!

What do I like to do when I’m not at Skin Pharm?

When I’m not working, most of my time is spent with my husband, Mitchell. We are lake and beach people, so when the weather is nice, that’s where you will find us. I love living an active lifestyle — I can’t sit still — so I enjoy all types of exercise.

My husband and I just had a baby boy, “Dunn” Samuel Stoffer, and I can’t wait to start this new chapter in my life as a mother (while also keeping up with my career!).

Say hello to “Dunn” Samuel Stoffer!

What do I wish I’d done when I was younger to take better care of my skin?

I hate to admit it, but I used to go to the tanning bed in high school. I wish I hadn’t done this, and I wish I’d listened to my mom when she told me to wear sunscreen EVERY DAY!

What would I like to continue to learn?

I love that I chose a career that is always changing (because how boring would it be if it didn’t?). I strive to continually learn the most up-to-date, evidence-based treatments for my patients. I always say that learning is so much fun when you love what you do.

What do I hope for my patients?

I hope each patient that I encounter feels that their needs, wants and goals are recognized. I also want them to know that I will do everything I possibly can to make these achievable for them. I personally use the products and have the treatments performed that I recommend because I believe in them. Ultimately, I hope my patients become the most confident version of themselves. When you look good, you feel good; when you feel good, you do good.

I recently shared my thoughts on balance and how I try to adhere to an “80/20” lifestyle. Today I’d like to share my daily routine, including the essential skin care, makeup and hair products I can’t live without. As a business owner and a mom of two young children, balance is something I’m always striving for, but I’ve got my daily routine down!

Morning Routine: Skin Care

On mornings that I exercise, I wash my face with water and apply Skin Pharm Youth Serum before my favorite Yoga Sculpt class at CorePower Yoga. After class, I start my usual morning skin care routine.

First, I cleanse with Skin Pharm Papaya Enzyme Cleanser or Gentle Soothing Cleanser. I switch between these because I have combination skin — the Papaya is great for all skin types and the Gentle is best for dry, sensitive to normal skin — so I alternate between both depending on my mood.

After patting my face dry, I swipe a Skin Pharm Clarifying Pad over my face, making sure to give an extra swipe in T-zone, where my skin tends to be more oily.

Once I’ve allowed the combination of salicylic acid, glycolic acid and botanical extracts from the Clarifying Pad to fully absorb into my skin, I dispense one dropper of Skin Pharm Youth Serum into hands and then massage onto my face, neck and décolletage with upward strokes to hydrate and plump skin. You’ll notice that I always use Youth Serum in the AM and PM immediately after cleansing and toning — this is why we call Youth Serum one of Skin Pharm’s hero products!

Skin Pharm Youth Serum

As soon as my Youth Serum has absorbed, I put one dropper of Skin Pharm Glow Factor into my hand and smooth onto my face with upward strokes to brighten skin tone and replenish skin (that gentle tingling feeling lets me know the vitamin C, vitamin E and ferulic acid are working to make my skin glow). On days when I feel like I need more hydration (especially during dry winter months when my skin feels parched from running the heat), I apply Skin Pharm Biotherapy Cream after serums. We get a lot of questions about what order to apply products, so remember that moisturizers like Biotherapy Cream always come after serums.

Next, I gently pat our Skin Pharm Youth Eye Complex around the eye area. Like our Youth Serum, the Youth Eye Complex absorbs quickly (which is ideal if you’re about to apply makeup).

If you know me, you know that the last — and, arguably, most important — step is SPF. In warmer, humid summer months I prefer Skin Pharm Sheer Defense SPF. In colder, drier winter months, I swap for Skin Pharm 100% Mineral Tinted SPF. Both offer a light tint that enhances my natural skin tone and protects from sun exposure.

Morning Routine: Makeup and Hair Products

When you’re happy with the way your skin looks, you don’t need to wear much makeup. With the tinted SPF serving as my “base,” I add a coat of Lancome Grandiose Extreme Mascara in Intense Black. I don’t wear lipstick every day, but when I do my go-to is Tom Ford Lip Color Matte Lipstick in Pussycat (04).

A few of my other staples include AmLactin Daily Moisturizing Body Lotion, which contains 12% lactic acid to gently exfoliate skin while providing hydration. I’m a big fan of Kevin Murphy Killer.Curls, especially when humidity is lower in the winter months, as this formula has fights frizz while defining curls with moisture. (Yes, it’s totally acceptable to have effortless beach waves any time of year!). Lastly, I love Aesop Deodorant, an aluminum-free spray that can handle a hot yoga class or anything else that life throws at you during the day.

Evening Routine: Skin Care

If I exercise in the evening, I gently cleanse before class with an Ursa Major Essential Face Wipe (these are great wipes to gently remove makeup before you do your evening skin care routine, or if you exercise midday or after work) and hydrate with Skin Pharm Youth Serum. When prepping for bed, I cleanse with the Skin Pharm Papaya Cleanser or Skin Pharm Gentle Soothing Cleanser to remove SPF and makeup before applying products.

On evenings when I exercise after work, I usually use a Skin Pharm Clarifying Pad after cleansing for a deeper treatment (oily skin types may already be using these twice a day). Next, I apply Youth Serum (the same way I did in the AM). Once that has absorbed, I apply Skin Pharm Retinol Drops or a prescription retinoid depending on how much I want to exfoliate. I focus application on areas of the face where I have melasma, or discolored patches, on my forehead and cheeks.

I then apply our Skin Pharm Youth Eye Complex, gently patting around the eye area just like in the AM, and Skin Pharm Biotherapy Cream to nourish and rehydrate skin overnight.

Two or three times a week, I use our Skin Pharm Clarifying Brightening Polish to exfoliate (be sure to be gentle when using this powerful exfoliator) and I also add the Epionce Enriched Firming Mask on evenings when I feel like I need more hydration. (Yes, this is the same mask that we love for long flights, road trips, Netflix marathons on the couch, etc.)

You’ll notice that the general rule is to let each product fully absorb into your skin before you apply the next one — it’s really that simple!

If you have questions about which products are best for you, schedule a consultation today!

Fillers, how do we love thee? Let us count the ways!

1. Fillers can enhance specific parts of the face

When most people hear the word “filler” they automatically think of lip filler. While lip filler is — and has been — very popular, dermal fillers are used to enhance multiple areas of the face. Fillers are different from botulinum toxins like Botox or Dysport because they don’t impact muscle motion. (Check out our post about injectables where we talked about dynamic and static wrinkles.) Instead, we inject fillers beneath the skin to restore fullness and smooth fine lines.

Fillers are used to plump lips and are especially effective for aging lips that have lost volume. They can also be injected around the mouth area, effectively erasing smile lines, and in the nasolabial folds — the “parentheses” lines that form between the mouth and the nose. Many of our patients ask for fillers to achieve the perfect pout (and newbies, don’t worry — we always aim to provide natural-looking results). But lately we’ve noticed more patients asking about cheek fillers to enhance cheekbones, leading us to wonder if cheek filler the new lip filler.

If you won’t leave the house until you apply your under-eye concealer, fillers are great for improving hollowing or darkness under the eyes. They can be used to provide a subtle lift to the eyebrow area, resulting in a refreshed appearance.

Added volume with Restylane to her lips and Voluma to her cheeks.

Added volume with Restylane to her lips and Voluma to her cheeks.

2. Fillers can be used for overall sculpting or face balancing

As if fillers weren’t versatile enough, they can also help with or overall balancing and sculpting. We’ve been seeing amazing results in patients who are looking to enhance a thin face with injections along the temples, cheeks and jawlines. We’re getting a lot of requests for jaw sculpting this year as more patients are seeing how this improves their overall appearance. If part of your face has ever felt off-balance to you in these areas, fillers can provide a subtle yet noticeable result.

3. Fillers are an effective treatment to fight scars and visible signs of aging

Fillers can improve the appearance of scarring and dermal atrophy (the literal thinning of your skin due to aging, sun exposure and medication). We’re getting more requests to treat non-facial areas, particularly to address scarring. If you’re fretting over wrinkles or sagging skin on your face or neck, fillers can help with that, too! Fillers that contain hyaluronic acid (like Juvederm and Restylane) erase crow’s feet, fine lines and forehead lines. (Again, these are the static lines discussed here.)

4. Certain types of fillers are reversible

We’ve had patients come to us because they went a little overboard on fillers. Rather than wait it out for several months — or more than a year! — we can dissolve hyaluronic acid-based fillers with hyaluronidase. We can’t say it enough: We always aim for natural-looking results at Skin Pharm, but if you are unhappy with results from hyaluronic acid-based fillers, we can fix that!

5. Fillers are both instantly gratifying and long-lasting

When you schedule an appointment for fillers, you don’t need to give up your entire day — the entire process takes roughly a half an hour. After your consult (which we insist upon each time to ensure you’ll see the results you want), the injections only take a few minutes. While you may experience redness, swelling and bruising, you can resume normal activity immediately (except for exercise — definitely wait 24 hours for a strenuous workout). Dermal fillers typically between six to 18 months, depending on the type used and the area it is injected.

We could keep going, but really — visit us and see for yourself. Fillers are the perfect gift to give yourself this year, and you’ll enjoy the results throughout 2020. If you’re wondering if fillers are right for you, give us a call at (615) 582-6726 or schedule a consult today!

One of my favorite things about Skin Pharm is the open dialogue we have with our patients. We love interacting with you on Instagram, where we’ll ask you questions about topics like the products and services we offer, where we should open our next location, or what we can do to make your experience here better.

I’m often asked how I balance running a business with being a wife and mother to two young children. I’m not going to lie: It’s not easy. But it’s also the most gratifying life I could have imagined. I don’t claim to have all the answers, but I have figured out that living a roughly 80/20 life works for me.

Roughly 80/20? What does that mean?

The fact that I’m calling it a “roughly 80/20 life” tells you a lot about me. I’m not the kind of person who counts every calorie or micro manages every second of the day. There are days where I’ll come home from the office, have dinner with my family, and after the kids are in bed, I’ll have an idea that I want to explore or bounce off my husband Brad. I can’t predict when inspiration will strike, so I can’t draw a hard line between work and play.

I aim to be disciplined 80% of the time. When it comes to diet, I do my best to eat nourishing food — high protein and low carb works for me — and fit in regular workouts. I never eliminate anything, but I bring healthy food to the office — I love salads and the hot kale wrap from E+Rose — so I have plenty of fuel to get through a busy day. I constantly drink water throughout the day, as I know it’s important to hydrate from the inside out. I limit the amount of caffeine and alcohol I consume, because I feel the toll it takes on my skin.

For exercise, I’m a big fan of CorePower Yoga, especially their incredible Yoga Sculpt classes, and I try to get a solid workout in three times a week. I like to think that chasing two toddlers around burns calories that I can’t even begin to quantify!

I try to get as much sleep as possible, which can be challenging with young kids, but I notice the effects on my skin — and my mood — when I’m sleep deprived. I’ve also noticed that I need more sleep than I used to (but really, could any of us keep up with the college versions of ourselves today?).

So if that’s the 80%, what’s the other 20% look like?

I’m human. I have days where I snack all day, eat too many carbs and too much sodium, drink tequila and skip workouts. Pizza is a weakness. Cereal is a weakness (if Lucky Charms are in the house, I’m screwed). But I feel the effects of this “20%” behavior pretty quickly, and that’s enough to get me back on track, which is why I don’t feel the need to entirely eliminate anything from my diet. By being disciplined more often than not, my body and skin thank me.

One of my favorite ways to pack nutrients into a quick, easy meal is to make a smoothie. I’ve asked you to share some of your favorite smoothie recipes on Instagram before, but I have a super easy one I keep coming back to: Lean1 Protein (chocolate flavor) mixed with a handful of spinach and either coconut water or water and ice. Sometimes I add a scoop of peanut butter when I use the smoothie as a meal replacement.

We hope you’re spending Thanksgiving Day with your loved ones. Today, we’d like to take the opportunity to thank you for being a part of the Skin Pharm family. We are truly grateful for each and every one of our patients.

Our hardworking team deserves some time off, so we will be closed today and tomorrow. Watch our Instagram for a giveaway during Small Business Saturday (trust us, you won’t want to miss this!) on November 30th. On Cyber Monday — that’s December 2nd — we’ll have 15% off all products (including gift sets) on our website.

We wanted to share some photos from our holiday happy hour a couple of weeks ago. It was great to see you all, and we can’t wait until the next one!

You planned ahead this year and made sure you booked your appointment for fillers and microneedling so you’d be extra glowing for all those holiday parties, yay! But you didn’t plan on the combination of cold temperatures, dry air from the heat being on overdrive, late nights, and one too many glasses of bubbly wreaking havoc on your skin. If you wake up feeling less than fabulous, here are some tips to get you back on track.

Help! Everything feels dry.

Did you wake up feeling like a raisin today? We know the feeling. Cold air carries less moisture than warm air, and cranking up the heater isn’t helping, either — all that dry air can cause skin irritation ranging from redness and flaking to cracking, chapping and even bleeding. Gross, we know. Add alcohol — which increases inflammation in the skin and can cause blood vessels to dilate, leading to redness — and you’ve set yourself up for one rough morning. Fortunately, that rough morning can be avoided with a bit of preparation.

You can combat the dry air by sleeping with a humidifier and by adding ultra moisturizing products to your skincare routine, such as our Skin Pharm Biotherapy Cream. This skin lifesaver is packed with intensely moisturizing ingredients that work together to repair your skin’s barrier function, combating dryness, restoring firmness and visibly reducing signs of aging, all while you sleep.

For days — or nights — when you need some extra TLC, we recommend Epionce’s Enriched Firming Mask. Powered by botanical ingredients that nourish stressed-out skin with a proprietary blend of barrier lipids, this mask calms visible redness and irritation. This mask works as a quick 10-minute refresher in the AM and is gentle enough to wear all night (we love it for long flights and car rides, too!).

We tend to drink less water in the winter, so be sure to stay hydrated throughout the day. Drinking water not only directly hydrates your skin, but is helps flush toxins out of your body and can improve symptoms of skin conditions like eczema and psoriasis.

Help! I’m broken out like a teenager.

Dry winter air can actually cause your skin to produce more sebum, leading to breakouts. Another major culprit is going to bed without washing your makeup off your face, which is just really bad for your skin (and your pillowcase). For normal to oily skin, we recommend Skin Pharm Papaya Enzyme Cleanser, a deep cleanser with salicylic acid (a godsend for acne-prone folks). Normal to dry skin types should opt for Skin Pharm Gentle Soothing Cleanser, which strips all your makeup and impurities while soothing skin with rich botanical extracts.

All skin types will benefit from one of our best-sellers, our Skin Pharm Clarifying Pads, which deliver a gentle, microchemical peel to exfoliate skin, clear acne and prevent future breakouts. Sensitive skin types may only need to use the pads two to three times a week, while oiler types can tolerate daily use.

If you’re in need of a stronger peel, we’re big fans of our Light Refresh Peel, a simple, non-invasive treatment that reduces pore size and treats uneven skin tone and blemishes. A series of peels not only improves any sun damage left over from the summer, but can smooth rough texture, fine lines and wrinkles. Chemical peels also stimulate collagen production underneath the skin, improving the overall appearance of your skin. Peels are quick and easy and require minimal recovery — they can be done on your lunch break — so you’ll be refreshed and glowing for those holiday parties in no time!
